Slab Surfacing
Are you working on a Live Edge project of your own? Let AgainstTheGrain help with our Slab surfacing services. We take pride in working with natural edge slabs so we will treat your slab like it is our own. With our attention to detail and dedication to quality, you can trust us to bring your vision to life.
- SLAB FLATTENING
Live edge slabs are often come from the sawmill rough sawn. While some may look fairly flat, they will more than likely need to be flattened prior to finishing to get a level surface. This crucial step in the process often requires a routing sled setup or CNC machine.

That's where we come in. We offer slab surfacing services for slabs up to 4' wide and 8' long. Our refined process transforms those rough slabs for you to sand and finish into your very own Live Edge piece.

01
Estimates
If you are interested in having your slab(s) surfaced, please contact with: the number of slabs, size (thickness, width, and length), photos, and if there is a desired end thickness. Our services have a two-hour minimum sand we will provide an estimate based off of the information you provide. We do require a Work Order to be signed and a down deposit (50% of the estimated time) to be paid prior to the slabs being dropped off.
02
Scheduling and Drop-off
Schedule openings are dependent on what we have going on in the shop, but generally speaking, we can get you scheduled within four weeks. Once a date is scheduled, please arrive with your slabs at the proposed time, bringing help if the slabs are large. We are located in Noblesville, Indiana and we do not have liftgate/load dock services.
03
Surfacing
Rest easy - your slabs are in good hands! We start the surfacing process by taking off up to an 1/8" on the top of the slab before flipping it over to do the same on the backside. We repeat this process - taking an even amount of surface off of each side - until the top of the slab is level. Low spots typically up to 1/4" deep on the backside will remain at our discretion to keep the slab as thick as possible.
04
Pickup
Slabs will typically be surfaced within a few days of them being dropped off at AgainstTheGrain. We will contact you (with photos) once they are completed to schedule a pickup, which needs to be completed within 5 days of the slabs being finished. Prior to pickup, the remaining balance is due.
