Wood Finishes
At AgainstTheGrain, we take great pride in the wood finishes we use for our projects. Our finishes are carefully selected to ensure the highest quality and durability. We believe in using eco-friendly and sustainable finishes whenever possible, to do our part for the environment.

- TRIED AND TRUE METHODS
From polyurethanes to epoxy flood coats and everything between, there are numerous finishes to choose from. In fact, we have tried most of them! How did we decide on the winner? It's simple. We focused on two key aspects:
-
Keeping the natural look of the wood
-
Easily maintainable by you, the owner

For the majority of our items, we use a LED Oil followed by a Nano Ceramics Coating for extra durability and protection. If we are crafting an item that will be in close contact with food (charcuterie boards, cutting boards, and serving trays), we use cutting board oil followed by cutting board wax.
Easy maintenance for you

Black Forest LED Oil
This finish uses advanced light-activated technology to cure instantly, creating a strong, permanent bond with both wood and epoxy. Instead of relying on air-drying over time, each coat hardens immediately, allowing for a precise, controlled application and a consistently clean result.

Because it bonds evenly across solid wood and epoxy, this finish is especially well suited for live edge and river tables. It eliminates common issues like uneven sheen or weak adhesion at epoxy transitions, creating a seamless surface that highlights the natural character of the slab.

Once cured, the finish forms a hard, protective surface that resists everyday wear and common spills such as water, wine, and coffee. Unlike softer oil finishes, it provides real surface protection while still preserving a natural, refined look. We use this finish to ensure your piece not only looks beautiful on day one, but continues to perform well for years to come

Black Forest Nano Ceramics
Black Forest Nano Ceramic Coatings are scientifically formulated to penetrate microscopic surface pores to provide a bonding layer of protection that is incredibly strong and resilient. Graphene coatings are one of the latest technological advancements to hit the coatings market.

Ceramic coatings work by adhering with the surface to form a protective shield that is next to diamond in hardness and hydrophobic causing liquid to bead on the surface. By reinforcing the surface, Black Forest Nano Ceramic Coatings are ideal in preventing and minimizing surface damage including: abrasion, chemical stains, UV damage and oxidation.

The higher surface sheen of Ceramic enhanced surfaces are easier to clean.
Our coatings are specifically formulated for use over woodworking finishes. By utilizing water based formula, no damage is done to the oil underneath, the water simply evaporates after application, leaving the protective coating.
